Though funky, the Kempinski doesn’t forget its past; a chandelier in the entrance is from 1864; alabaster lustres in the bar and the smoking room; and the original library, has a beer painted ceiling.

The Lady’s’ Salon has an old tradition of inviting its guests to sign their empty wine bottle to be displayed for posterity. Each signed bottle can be found, requested upon their return. A warm marketing ploy to entice return visits, though It’s not needed; they will return anyway.

Wifi is free throughout and there are seven conference rooms with the latest technology.

A very special element from the past is the Mauritius Spring. It originates in one of the hotels buildings. For 3000 years people have been drinking from the St Moritz Spring or ‘Sanct Mauritz’ as it was originally known. The springs are now accessible from the hotel 24 hours a day.

Wood from the Engadin forest was used to create the unique atmosphere of the spa. Begin your relaxation by having a large glass of the magical spring water before sampling the pleasures of the spa. There is a plethora to choose from, bio sauna, stone and herbal sauna, steam bath and heated pool. Treat yourself to the signature Kempinski High Alpine Treatment that includes, warm alpine stone full body massage.

In keeping with the youthful theme, Matthias Schmidberger, chef of the Cà d’Oro Restaurant was just 30 when he won his first Michelin star in 2011. He did this in his first season and achieved the only Michelin Star that St Moritz has, starting with the Kempinksi chain when he was just 28 years old.

The menu, quite obviously, is exceptional. Three waiters attend and the sommelier will know exactly which wine you would like; almost before you’ve decided to have any.

Partnerships to source ingredients are formed to compliment the master and his team at work. Olive oil is sourced from Italy and Appenzell dairyman produces the milk for the butter. The Breton lobster and Luma beef fillet were dreamlike. This restaurant must be on your ‘Bucket List’.

The Swiss can teach the rest of Europe a lot. Moving on from their obvious fiscal strengths, there is a national pride that permeates when you visit. Nothing is too much effort, even though in winter, the majority of tourism workers are from other countries, they take on the love of Switzerland and ensure that you come away with Toberlone in one hand and a return ticket in the other.
